6. Critical Reflection

Room for improvement

The connections between the user and the members of the society should be considered and expanded. The rules of the Savant can be defined more accurately and also specify even more the judging system. We didn’t think about the functions of the database and how the judgments are formulated. The next step could be thinking about higher ranked users that control the Savant for a certain period and give  judgments in real time.

Some transitions in the animation could be improved; some graphics could be more accurate and coherent. Due to a problem within Processing, in the initial stage where the camera is used only some part of our initial idea was applied. The problem is discussed in the coding section. However, the possibilities of augmented reality could fit perfectly with our initial vision.

The internal system of the stakeholders should be analyzed and developed in a deeper way; however, much of the social dynamics and connections within the sect should be born spontaneously.

Positive aspects

We combined the different visions and points of view of each member of the group. We were able to produce diverse solutions for the initial concept and finally decide upon an idea agreed by everyone.

The project critiques, in a humorous way, some of society’s judgment standards and unwritten laws about different social dynamics that are hard to comply with. The broader aspect of the project was to expose what is not seen: if you don’t look a certain way you don’t exist. We are all continuously under this sometimes implacable and subtle judgment system.

In reality the project can have approaches separate from those created for the hypothetical scenario. The project could be used for a fashion store or a lifestyle trainer, or as open source software for people to share and create spontaneous fashion. Another possible application is for stores to have certain garments in a database, allowing users to try them on virtually if the changing rooms are occupied.

The graphic style and direction worked perfectly with the scenario constructed. The animations and flow of the information worked clearly and improved the function of the program. The system for choosing garments also functions properly.

We learned about the fundamental techniques to start and develop an interaction design project, new technological opportunities, Processing as a programming language and a new approach to the development of projects based on hypothetical scenarios that concentrates on users. It was important to consider the steps and objectives established to work on a project that demanded a fast working pace.

The conceptual stage was fundamental for developing an application that had a logic coherent with the context of the hypothetical Venice we constructed. The brief was very interesting and it allowed us to explore diverse and different ideas including some that were very strange. We learned to divide different tasks between each group member to reduce the work load and reach the established goal faster. We imagined how the interaction between the user and the application should be. An important aspect was eliminating superficial aspects that can confuse the user and highlighting those that were useful.
